No medical exam

No exam life insurance: how it works, and what the catch is

By Paulina Swietek-Gorski, Licensed Life Insurance Agent

Many life insurance policies can now be approved without a nurse visit, blood draw, or lab work. That is real, and for a lot of people it is the easiest way in. It is not the same as no questions, though, and it is not always the best price.

What no exam actually means

You still answer health questions on the application. The insurer checks your answers against records it is allowed to see, such as prescription history, and decides based on that. If everything lines up, the policy can be approved without an exam, often faster.

The catch

When the exam is worth it

If you are healthy and want a larger amount, the exam can lower your premium. When one is needed, the insurer arranges and pays for it, and it can often be done at your home. Paulina tells you up front which route fits your age, health, and the amount you need.

Common questions

Can I get life insurance without a medical exam?

Often, yes. Many policies can be approved based on health questions and records checks. Whether you qualify depends on the insurer, your age, your health, and the amount.

What's the catch with no exam life insurance?

Lower coverage limits, and sometimes a higher price than you would get after an exam. Policies with no health questions at all are usually small and may have a waiting period.

Who pays for the medical exam if I need one?

The insurer. It is usually done by a visiting examiner, often at your home.
